I am amazed to see the kind of lavish parties kids these days get on their birthdays. When I was a kid, it only used to be a small party at our house. Guests mostly were my cousins, some school friends and the neighbourhood kids. But now just like weddings and anniversaries, throwing birthday parties in hotels, banquet halls and farmhouses for kids as young as 3-4 years are quite commonplace. Just recently I attended the birthday party of my niece. It was her 3rd birthday and the parents wanted to make it special for her.
So there I was at The Parkland in Safdarjung Enclave, all dressed up to attend a kid's birthday party. The whole banquet was decorated with pink balloons (such a cliche!) and large structures of the new-age cartoon characters (which I hardly recognised!). As there were many young children in the guest list, the menu was designed to their liking. The banquet hall did not look claustrophobic with the 50-55 odd guests. A very good thing about the whole evening was the attitude of the hotel team. All the servers were seen smiling, playing with the kids and interacting with the elders. Had I been a parent, I would have liked the whole scene.
